WITHIN Box village the magnificent railway portal of one of Britain’s most respected Victorian engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, stood proudly for all to view from the special viewing platform constructed adjacent to the main road.
Many people come from all parts of the country to view the West Portal tunnel and trains, especially steam trains, as they leave and enter the tunnel on the historic GWR line.
Regrettably, due to lack of maintenance on the railway embankment by Network Rail, views of this important Grade II- listed portal are obliterated.
Network Rail is able to afford many millions on electrification but seems unable to undertake appropriate maintenance of this embankment, which allows views of Brunel’s iconic tunnel from the viewing platform for the benefit of the general public.
If your readers are equally concerned, I suggest that they write to Network Rail.
