THE streets of Westbury could soon have fewer hazards for drivers, as the town council have now approved a raft of traffic safety measures and sent them to Wiltshire Council for approval.

If they are approved, double yellow lines will be introduced to a number of areas across the town to combat careless parking.

Arundell Close, near Bitham Brook, School, could get double yellow lines to stop parents obstructing nearby drives when they drop off and collect children, a suggestion which has already been accepted by the town council.

Parking restrictions could also be placed at the the entrance to Primmers Place, after fears that emergency services may not be able to reach homes there because of inconsiderate parking.

Lines may also go down at the Oldfield Road entrance to Phoenix Rise, because people are parking on the junction and restricting visibility.

Cllr Gordon King said: “These proposals are important. For the past two years residents have voiced their concerns on many issues such as blocking emergency vehicles and waste collection.

“From the eight requests made, all but one has been approved by us, and we feel the issue at The Butts needs to be extended to including Willloughby Close also. This has been sent back to Wiltshire Council.”

Mayor Ian Cunningham said: “We want to make Westbury a safe and accessible place for its residents. Some of these requests are dated so it is good to know that they will finally be sent to Wiltshire Council.”

“We are a growing town with more and more cars on the roads so making sure that these roads are clear will drastically reduce the chance of accidents.”
