MARK Day kept the trophies in the family at the Westwood Flower & Vegetable Show on Monday.

Father Neville Day had decided not to enter after scooping up countless trophies over previous years and was asked to become a judge instead.

But his son Mark kept up the family tradition by taking home the Hancock Memorial Challenge Cup for a display of four vegetables and the Neville Day Cup for a trio of carrots, which were judged to be the best exhibit in the fruit and vegetable section.

John Streeter, the Westwood Flower & Vegetable Show chairman, said: “The show has turned out a lot better than expected.

“Growers have been hit by the long, hot summer this year and we were afraid the entries in the vegetable section would be low.

“But we have been pleasantly surprised and we’ve had some very good entries.”

More than 300 people attended this year’s show, which included a raffle, skittles, barbecue and a performance by the Bath Spa Band in St Mary’s Churchyard.

The Westwood Women’s Institute provided teas, coffees, cakes and other light refreshments in the newly-renovated Parish Room.

Kay Crawford, of Upper Westwood, took the Westwood Parish Council Cup for scoring the most points across all sections, as well as the David Lewis Cup for most points in the fruit and vegetable section.

Mrs Crawford also took home a flower pot for scoring the most points in the flower section, scoring four firsts. Rachel Aust won the WI Token for the best geranium.

Other trophy winners were: John Streeter (The John Philpott Trophy for best exhibit in cookery section), Sarah Humphries (The Richard Phillips Cup for best exhibit in craft), Colin Dagger (The Ken Miller Cup for best exhibit in home brewing), Lucy Davies (a cup for the best exhibit in the children’s section), and Benjamin Humphries, Elspeth Snook and Lucy Davies (joint winners for the most points in the children’s section).

Elspeth Snook (Pre-school), Benjamin Humphries (Infants), Lucy Davies (Juniors), Jeannie Johnston and Victoria Owen (joint winners, flower arranging), Colin Dagger (home brewing), John Streeter (photography), Sarah Humphries (craft), John Streeter (cookery), Kay Crawford (flowers) all received flower pots for the most points in each section.
