TWO restaurants at Warminster service station in Bath Road have seen their food hygiene ratings plummet from five stars to one in just over two years.

Inspections made by Wiltshire Council at the EG Diner and Subway revealed major improvements were necessary for hygienic food handling, the condition of cleanliness in the building and the management of food safety. The EG Diner has since been closed as part of a planned refurbishment at the services.

Wiltshire Council said: “A routine food hygiene inspection was conducted at the EG Diner and it revealed a number of issues relating to poor oversight of food safety management and poorly trained staff. This unit is currently closed along with Travelodge and Burger King as part of the refurbishment plans for this Warminster services area.

“The Subway inspection also revealed a number of issues relating to poor oversight of food safety management, including matters of poor temperature control and inexperienced staff.

“We have since revisited the outlet to ensure these matters are being addressed and are working with the wider company management to ensure staff are appropriately trained and improved standards are maintained.”

The inspections on July 19 and June 25 were the first at both restaurants since 2016.

The service station was previously owned by Granada Services but was bought by Eurostar garages in March 2017.

Commercial director Ilyas Mushi said: “We’re working closely with Wiltshire Council to ensure our Warminster site retains five-star hygiene ratings again as soon as possible.

“We’re committed to providing best-in-class retail and food-to-go services and are currently investing in an extensive refurbishment to improve and modernise our Warminster site for customers.”

Subway declined to comment on the rating.
