DRIVERS say they fear the new roundabout on Trowbridge Road in Westbury will become an accident blackspot this winter, unless street lighting is installed there soon.

Worried residents have issued warnings on social media urging drivers to take care in the dark when approaching the roundabout, which was built on the A350 as part of the new housing estates.

On Facebook, Josie Lauren Ellis commented: “It’s poorly signed and comes out of nowhere, for people who have been driving that road for years and aren’t used to it it’s very easy to forget when you can’t clearly see it. It’s even worse for people who don’t know the road and miss the sign in the dark.”

Maine Shapard said: “I am very aware of this roundabout as it has almost caught me out a couple of times and not because I am not paying enough attention.”

Westbury Mayor Cllr Ian Cunningham said: “My personal view is that there does need to be lighting on the roundabout.

“I know of some people who have had a few ‘last moments’ on that roundabout even in the day time, and it is obviously worse in the dark.

“Even when you know it is coming it creeps up on you.

“Something needs to be done before a serious accident happens.”

Westbury town clerk Deborah Urch said: “The town council have been in touch with Wiltshire Council about this issue.

“We have received a number of calls very concerned about the safety of this roundabout.

“Lighting columns were installed last week, so they should be working soon. This should be a huge improvement for drivers and make the approach to Westbury safer.”
