THERE is no need to be lonely in Trowbridge this Christmas, as a Christmas Day lunch is being held again this year for people who otherwise would be alone.

The festive event, now in its eighth year, will be organised by volunteers from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, Wiltshire Council and apetito.

Last year 250 guests and volunteers enjoyed a special day together in the Atrium at County Hall, which plays host again this year.

Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this event again, as no one should be alone on Christmas Day.

“We recognise that this event helps many people to come together to celebrate the day and enjoy a wonderful Christmas lunch.

“I would like to personally thank all volunteers that help in the run-up to the event and on the day. Also, apetito, who kindly donate all the meals, and Elior for providing the dining facilities.”

Volunteers are still needed to make the event a success, both in the run-up to Christmas Day and on the day itself. People are needed to help with leaflet drops, putting up posters and collecting/sorting gift donations. On Saturday, December 22 between 10am and noon, the team will be decorating the Atrium and any help would be greatly appreciated.

During the event, the team need volunteers who would like to welcome guests, are happy to sit with them to listen, talk and provide companionship for the day, collect them and return them home in the afternoon, help with dining room duties, operate the cloakroom and to be an important part of what makes the day a friendly, fun and family atmosphere.

If you can spare some time and would like to volunteer, email christmaslunch@wiltshire.gov.uk for a registration form before Monday, 10 December 10.

If you’re unable to spare any time but would like to donate to the gift bags for guests items can be handed in at the Atrium at County Hall. The best items for guest gift bags are boxes of sweet or savoury biscuits, chocolates, coffee and tea bags, selection packs, thermal undergarments, hats and scarf sets, warm socks and tights, slippers and toiletry gift sets, food and beauty vouchers and small hampers.

If you would like to help towards the cost of the lunch, donations can be sent to Company for Christmas, Santander, A/C no. 87345811, Sort code: 090128.

Doors open at 10am for volunteers, and guests are expected to arrive by 11.30am to enjoy the morning entertainment. Lunch will be served at 12 noon. After lunch, there will be more entertainment and a raffle, then guests will be taken home with their gift bags around 3pm.

To book to attend the lunch and enjoy a Christmas with company can email christmaslunch@dwfire.org.uk or phone 07734 483881.
