A POPULAR canal boater died after falling into the Bradford on Avon Marina following a night out at the nearby pub.

Rodney James Parr, 57, had spent the last night of his life drinking with friends in The Boathouse pub on the Trowbridge Road at Bradford on Avon.

He was pulled from the water on the morning of Sunday, December 9 by one of his neighbours, who had seen a jacket floating on the surface, an inquest in Salisbury was told.

Mr Parr, who was divorced, was a self-employed painter and decorator, who had lived in his canal boat, Water Music, at the marina for several years.

Initially, his death was treated as unexplained and police appealed for witnesses. They later said it was not suspicious.

Ian Singleton, the assistant coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon, recorded a verdict of accidental death, saying the cause of death was drowning.
