Accident fear

I WAS passing by the new splash park in Melksham today, which is going to be great fun for all, and is very welcome. I am worried about the several boulders that have been put in. They are a trip hazard waiting to happen.

Children will be running around in the wet and it is inevitable that someone will trip and fall. Most children anticipate where the ground is but if a boulder is in the way it is very likely they will break an arm.

I speak from experience, my son fell and snapped his arm at right angles on such a boulder. I mentioned this to the people there and the man in charge said “They are fine, they comply with regulations”.

His dismissive attitude was quite surprising. Let’s hope I’m wrong, that no such accidents happen and that nobody is found negligent if an accident that is completely avoidable and foreseeable does happen.

Thank you, voters

I WRITE to say a huge thank you to the voters on July 18 for their confidence in electing me to the vacant Wiltshire Council seat in Westbury North. It is a great honour which I appreciate almost beyond words.

I promise to be a councillor for everyone whether you voted for me or not and to work hard on all of your behalf. I realise from speaking to so many of you on your doorstep that it was always going to be a hard decision as so many of you, like me, are so despondent with the national political situation.

By voting for me you demonstrated local politics still matter. So If like me you want to see real improvements in Westbury then may I suggest that you contact the Town Clerk and get involved with your local Neighbourhood Plan or the newly formed Shopkeepers Forum.

Or contact the head teacher of Westbury Junior School to get involved with the exciting Hub project to transform the old Youth Centre. You could contact Sovereign Housing to join POPCAM, a neighbourhood engagement project or help in the fight against the granting of an environment permit for the Gasification Plant at Northacre Park or come to your community Area Board.

My contact details will soon be on the Wiltshire Council website; my council email address is carole.king@wiltshire.gov.uk.

Hope for future

FOR some months we were assured that we should leave the EU on 31st March. That date came and went and there has been no explanation or even an apology. Fortunately we have now been able to rid ourselves of this most ineffective Prime Minister and she and her mostly inefficient Cabinet are now history. Hopefully the new Ministers will be able to undo most of the damage which has been done.

Protest’s wrong

ASIDE from wondering whether disrupting traffic and thereby causing extra pollution and antagonising potential sympathisers trying to go about their lawful business by what is often the only practical means might be counterproductive, I wonder about the attitude of some of the protesters.

Billy Bragg was singing protest songs in their support: is this the same man who was singing songs in support of coal mining?

Did all those who were in London and Bristol travel by foot or bicycle?

Have all those who attended never flown?

No peace in EU

I TAKE issue with most of what Vivienne Kynaston says in her pro EU letter, especially the myth that the EU has brought peace to Europe. According to Wikipedia there have been 67 occurrences classed as conflict since the end of WW2, with 9 currently ongoing.

Further, the former East European countries were happy to join the EU because they have had massive handouts to improve infrastructure etc while the UK suffers appalling roads, housing etc.

There are very few EU countries putting money in compared to the many taking it out.

Warn them off

THE developers are at it yet again, wanting to build 200 homes on Storridge Road. They are putting through exactly the same application - wanting to knock down no’s 13 & 14 and put 200 more houses in their place. These developers need to be told in very simple terms what they can do with the plans.

Westbury can’t cope with any more houses, cars, lorries etc. When is this going to stop - people in Westbury with gardens need to watch out or the developers will want to stick houses on them.

Ms Stroud, Westbury

Respect the result

THREE years after the democratic decision to leave the EU we continue have copious letters expounding how wonderful the EU is, as demonstrated in last week’s WT issue by one of your serial Remainer correspondents.

The point is, it doesn’t really matter. The majority of the electorate thought otherwise, hence the Referendum result, so despite three years of obstruction by the establishment, the civil service, the BBC and some MP’s, we need to nail it now.

If the 2016 Referendum result is not implemented we are on dangerous ground which does not bode well for any future elections if we are always going to have this nonsense and obstruction from the losing side.
