A six-year-old girl from Bradford on Avon has raised funds for the charity caring for her grandfather.

Greta Thomas held a summer fundraiser at her home for The Royal Star & Garter Home in Surbiton, which is caring for grandfather Mark Farmer, aged 75.

Thirty friends and family from Christ Church Primary School in Bradford on Avon attended an ice cream and cake celebration in Greta’s garden, raising £140 for the home.

Mr Farmer, who is living with dementia, has been a resident at the Home for three years.

The charity cares for ex-servicemen and women and their partners living with disability or dementia. Mr Farmer served in the Royal Corps of Signals between 1963 and 1969.

Claire Thomas, Greta’s mum and Mr Farmer’s daughter, said: “She’s been desperate for months to do a fundraiser for the charity but finding the right thing for a six-year-old was tricky. £140 is a lot for a child to raise, and I’m really proud of her.”

Greta said: “Fundraising for The Royal Star & Garter Homes was really good because it was fun. I am amazed at how much money we got."

Liz Donaldson, Dementia Care Manager at the Surbiton Home, said: “Greta is obviously an incredibly caring and loving granddaughter, and we’re touched with the money she’s raised for the charity. We can’t thank her enough!”

The Royal Star & Garter Homes is a charity founded in 1916 to care for the severely injured men returning from the battlegrounds of the First World War.

The charity now provides award-winning care for military veterans and their partners who live with disability or dementia.

The charity's state-of-the-art homes offer a pioneering approach to nursing, dementia and therapeutic care.

It has award-winning homes in Solihull in West Midlands, Surbiton in Surrey, and in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

The charity said: "We continue to expand our services to reach even more veterans. In 2018, we were able to support 186 residents in our Homes and 36 guests at our Day Care service.

"We also offer interim care for young disabled service personnel. We provided 11,700 individual sessions of physiotherapy and speech and language therapy last year, and over 5,600 places to residents for activities, outings and events to promote well-being.
