A MAN said to be "acting suspiciously" was arrested by police in Darlington this morning, Friday.

He is currently in police custody being questioned after the arrest, shortly after 10am.

The man was spotted in St Cuthbert’s Way, Darlington.

A police spokesman said: "A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a bladed article and having an offensive weapon in a public place, namely a broom shank. The man cooperated fully during the incident, which lasted approximately five minutes.

"He is currently in police custody."
