A GROUP of school children hosted a live radio show at the UK's largest education technology show.

Six pupils, aged 10 to 11, who are in Year Six at Westwood-with-Iford Primary School, near Bradford on Avon, headed to Bett 2020, at London’s ExCEL Centre.

Around 10,000 people attend the four-day broadcasting event. Headteacher Ian Rockey said: “We went last year so NetSupport radio invited us back to be the official broadcasters of the show this year.

“We had an afternoon takeover of the radio station for an hour and we were the only school that took it over, so it was a real achievement.

“It was a magazine-style show with the children hosting. We’re one of the only primary schools in the country to do as much radio coverage as we do. We use it across the curriculum to improve confidence, resilience and skills.

The pupils covered content about school news, poll questions and off-script dialogue.

“It was entirely run by the children, they were very professional, I just stood watching on the side. It was incredibly gratifying watching them and I’m very proud as some have come on such a journey. Education radio backs up what we’re doing in class.”

“The pupils did all of it, they wrote scripts, conducted interviews and did live coverage. They were very professional in the middle of the floor.

“It went really well and Russel Prue the host of NetSupport Radio did a rehearsal with them and some warm-up exercises. They found it the best experience and took it in their stride. We couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved. We use radio to show what we do to the world.”

The school run their own radio station, Westwood School radio with three live shows a week.

The school also do a live radio show at Wiltshire Heights care home in Bradford on Avon.
