ARMED response vehicle officers, who were out on patrol, stopped a green Ford Focus after they suspected that it was being driven by an uninsured driver.
The vehicle was stopped on Tuesdayat around 3pm on the A350 at Beanacre, near Melksham.
The male driver, who admitted to officers that he had taken cannabis beforehand, was drug tested at the roadside which proved positive.
A 40-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, driving without a licence and insurance.
He was taken to Melksham custody centre and was released under investigation while police enquiries continue. His vehicle was also seized.
PC David Rooksby said: "When we stopped the car we noticed that there was a child passenger on board too.
"This shows total irresponsible behaviour as this driver could have easily caused a collision - not only seriously injuring another motorist but the child and himself.
"The message here is, if you get in a vehicle under the influence of drink or drugs, you not only risk being caught but also risk injuring or possibly killing yourself and others, not to mention losing your vehicle.
"It's never worth it."
