The East Kennet Bridge will be closed to allow for repairs following a hit-and-run incident in July which caused £35,000 of damage.

On July 9 a driver collided into the road bridge at East Kennet before driving off in the badly damaged vehicle and causing tens of thousands of pounds of damage to the bridge.

The council's highways team began works on Tuesday, September 1, which are expected to take a total of 21 days to complete as highways staff rebuild the bridge parapet and other works.

Drivers are asked to take the unaffected length of the C73 and Fyfield junction and the C38 to C73 and vice versa.

C73 Kennet Bridge, East Kennet will be closed for approximately 25 meters each side of the centre of the river bridge

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “Access will be maintained for residents and businesses where possible, although delays are likely due to the nature of the works.”

The council said that Wiltshire Police are in the process of identifying the driver and ‘if successful the costs will be recovered via the offending driver’s insurance’.
