Firefighters were called to Wavering Lane East in Gillingham today (December 7) after an elderly man fell off his mobility scooter and into the River Stour.

Brave firefighters were able to wade in and rescue the man.

A spokeswoman from the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 10.06am after reports that an elderly man on a mobility scooter was in the River Stour.

"Two crews attended, from Gillingham and Wincanton – we also mobilised our water rescue teams from Trowbridge and Chippenham, as it was unclear from the 999 call how deep the water was, but they were turned back before arrival as the water was shallow enough for firefighters on scene to wade in and assist the man to safety.

"The stop came at 10.27am."
