Independent Police & Crime Commissioner candidate says he wants to see more done to confront domestic abuse.

Former detective inspector for Wiltshire Police, Mike Rees labelled all forms of domestic abuse as a significant issue within communities – whether it is physical violence, psychological abuse or coercive control.

Mr Rees said that support groups, as well as the police, are vital in keeping victims safe “in what can often be a very complex and demanding situation to deal with”.

On social media, Mr Rees said construction company Morgan Sindall has provided training for its trades people to be able to spot possible signs of abuse when they are working within homes – a practice he would like carried over to Wiltshire.

Mr Rees wrote: “It is an excellent initiative and one that I would very much encourage and support within similar businesses in Wiltshire.”

The PCC would-be did however discuss his disappointment at MPs voting down Amendment 42 of the Domestic Abuse Bill.

Amendment 42 would have seen serial abusers and stalkers placed on a national register.

“In my view, such an initiative can only serve to keep people safer,” he added.
