A MELKSHAM councillor is urging the town council to delay holding its annual council meetings until June when Covid-19 pandemic restrictions will be further relaxed.

Richard Wiltshire says the move will enable the council to dispense with ordering £28,000-worth of audio/video equipment to ensure social distancing.

Town clerk Linda Roberts has reserved the Melksham Assembly Hall for the annual council meeting on May 17 and the annual town meeting on May 24. This will allow members of public, councillors and staff to comply with the Covid-19 regulations.

Mr Wiltshire said: "We are now aware that further relaxation of Covid regulations could apply from June 21 and the need for audio/video equipment could therefore be less.

"Before the council spends £20,000 on equipment to cover a very short period could we wait to assess the requirements that may apply after June 21? Also, we are not meeting our standing orders which require at least three quotations for any such equipment."
