Marlborough’s street market has kept going throughout the pandemic - and often through some considerable rain.

Now the sun has made an appearance, so have a raft of new traders who have had business ideas inspired by lockdown.

Dan LeFevre has his Thai Tuesdays stall up and running, and his food delivery service was a lockdown inspired business idea.

“We deliver Thai food to village halls between here and Hungerford,” he said

“I’m from London, and I used to work on tour with bands but when lockdown started and all the concerts got cancelled I was cooking for people in my village and doing some international foods. I put the idea on the school WhatsApp group and in the first week I got 60 orders., so I started preparing from my house and the Three Tuns pub in Great Bedwyn, and now I work out of Sue Brady Catering in Marlborough.

“I’ll be doing a tour of the village halls around here doing pop up restaurants over the Summer.”

Guy Burnett is the Grimsby Fish guy. And he is actually from Grimsby.

“I come to sell fish - there are not too many people selling it around here so it is a good market. The fish all comes from the fish market in Grimsby. I head off around Fleet and a couple of other places in Hampshire, and then I go to Surrey, and then back up to Grimsby again. I stay in hotels en route.”

Amanda Harrington’s partner is from Johannesburg in South Africa, and says their BiltongBar stall is going extremely well.

“It is a new business for us - and there are a lot of South Africans in and around the town so we are popular with them. They track us down as they love their biltong!

“We are starting to spread the word about biltong to the English now - which is starting to pick up for us too.”

Ilke and Elan add an even more international flavour to the market. Ilke is from Istanbul while Elon is a New Yorker. Another lockdown inspired idea prompted their new business designing and hand printing organic cotton T shirts.

Ilke is from the creative world of advertising film production, which has also seen a hit over the past year and Elan is a visual comedy performer.

“The whole idea was that we were going to do this business while I was touring but lockdown came and we went full steam into it.

“I do totally silent comedy - a bit like Mr Bean on stage. I worked on the Moulin Rouge and in Las Vegas.”

“This is nice - it is just us and we are really enjoying it. We came up with the idea and learned how to screen print 10 years ago.

Sean Oates comes to Marlborough from from Chipping Sodbury - and has been coming to Marlborough Market for nearly three years now.

“Its better now we are coming out of lockdown and the sun is shining.

“It has been quite touch and go, and the weather is challenging. I have a lot of regular customers here so it is certainly worth coming here.”

Christie Grant from Burbage was picking up some summer clothes from Sean’s stall on her way back from the gym.

“It is so lovely to come out here when the sun is shining and pick up a bit of a treat for myself!”

Marlborough market is on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
