A WILTSHIRE children’s author is to join local businesses to officially open a new library at West Ashton Primary School today.

Trowbridge-based children’s author, Stuart McDonald, will be joined by local businesses such as Apetito and Ross Hillman Ltd to officially open the new library at the village school.

Family and friends of West Ashton Primary School's 90 pupils have also been invited to the ceremony at 5pm.

There will be bouncy castles, donkey rides, fun stalls, hot dogs, and a tuck shop for all to enjoy before the ribbon is cut.

School head teacher Debby Huxham said: "We are absolutely thrilled. It is going to make such a huge difference for the children.

"They will have a nice, quiet place where they can go and find a book to read and it will be nice to have all our books in one place rather than being spread around the school."

The wooden building was constructed by local parent and builder Stuart Millar, of Stuart Millar Garden and Home Maintenance.

He worked tirelessly in his spare time along with parents, staff and the Friends of West Ashton School to get the building ready for the grand opening and filled with books so the children can now use it.

The Friends of West Ashton School have been fundraising for the much-needed library for the last three years.

They raised £10,000 towards the cost of more than £14,000 by organising various fundraising events such as a black-tie ball, school fetes, and ‘wear what you like’ days.

The school also received generous donations from local businesses and individuals to enable them to buy the library building in the summer term.

Mrs Huxham said: "On behalf of West Ashton School and FOWAS we would like to thank Stuart Millar, Apetito, Ross Hillman Ltd, Collaborate Global, Medlock Charitable Trust, GKN Aerospace, FABS Frome Area Building Supplies, B&Q, J W Ransome and Sons and Simon Montacute.

"We would also like to thank Mr & Mrs Hawkins, Mr & Mrs Harris, Mr Harbour, Mrs Draper, Mrs Steel, West Ashton Staff and FOWAS working party for their kind donations."
