A WILTSHIRE farmer must pay the courts more than £1,200 for not taking proper care of dozens of cattle.

Peter Pattle, of Tower Hill in Westbury, pleaded guilty to not providing a suitable environment for the 81-strong herd on land associated with his home address on or before October 27 2020.

The 66-year-old did not take reasonable steps to ensure the needs of the animals were met.

He must pay a £200 fine plus £1,000 in court costs and £34 to victim services.

He received no separate penalty for five similar charges, which related to the welfare of 81 cattle on December 1 2020, 66 cattle on January 27 2021, and 75 cattle on April 13 and May 12 2021.

The last charge related to when Pattle took on an employee to attend to the cattle and did not take reasonable steps to ensure she was acquainted with the Code of Practice for Cattle.
