As part of the Building Heroes programme, Wiltshire College & University Centre is assisting military members in transitioning to new occupations.
Building Heroes is a training programme that equips military veterans and those nearing the end of their duty with a comprehensive set of skills that can be used for a career in property management.
Following completion of training, the plan assists candidates in finding work in the construction trades.
The college is one of the programme providers, offering part-time Foundation in Property Maintenance courses at both its Salisbury and Trowbridge campuses to applicants.
The course lasts five weeks and is offered six times a year at the college, with roughly 20 active or retired military members enrolled each time.
Callum Reid is a member of the current cohort in Salisbury and currently serves in the 19th Regiment Royal Artillery based at Larkhill near the campus.
He said: “I have six months left in the military and I'm 90 per cent sure I want to get into construction once I am out.
“When this course came up, I had no hesitation in signing up for it. It’s really good, it teaches all the basics in things like joinery and bricklaying.”
