Organisers of the Devizes Food and Drink Festival have been inspired by the #CookForUkraine initiative trending on Instagram, and recently planned and prepared a Community Supper for Ukraine in only 26 days.

A spokesperson for the event said: “We mobilised the troops, went out with our begging bowl and offers of help poured in as soon as word of our event got out.

“Volunteer cooks, bakers, table layers, raffle donations, washing up saints, suppliers of china and cutlery and, most importantly, food retailers in and around Devizes were amazing.”

Young people have also been getting involved it seems, as the spokesperson added: “Also, some teenagers from St Augustine’s School in Trowbridge offered to be waiters for the evening and were brilliant.

“We were overwhelmed and so grateful to everyone who stepped up and helped make the evening so successful. It meant that virtually all the ticket and raffle monies raised as well as cash donations could go towards this critical cause where immediate help is so necessary.”

A menu of Ukrainian dishes, all recipes for which were sourced from cookery books by UK-based Ukrainian food writer, Olia Hercules, was enjoyed by the guests, and Ukrainian born Anya Toropov from Soup Chick in The Shambles was also on hand.
