St Peter's Church in Poulshot, with a 13th Century origin has announced that it is going to be renovating its bells which have not been rung in ‘living memory.’

This is due to their ‘deteriorated state.’

The church just outside Devizes has said it is now proposing all three bells be restored for stationery electronic chiming.

A spokesperson said: “The proposed works will ensure that the bells and their frames are in good condition and reduce ongoing deterioration.

“The first bell dedicated to St. John the Evangelist dates from c1540.

“The second and third date from 1606.

“Before the tower was constructed, the three bells were rung from a wooden bell turret found in the western point of the nave.”

They are all rich with history, with the treble bell made at the medieval Bristol Foundry in the c15th, and the second and third made by John Wallis of Salisbury in 1606.
