POLICE have today reminded people about home security advice after an attempted burglary in the Staverton area of Trowbridge last night.

At around 1.15am this morning (26/05) officers received a call from a member of the public who had been woken by suspects trying to break into his property.

They had also been seen trying car door handles and climbing over a fence into a garden.

A police spokeswoman said: “We believe there were at least three suspects and they were disturbed by a dog barking, so made off from the scene in a vehicle.

“Officers attended swiftly and a pursuit was authorised after a silver Ford Focus failed to stop for police.

“It was located near Whaddon Lane, in the Hilperton area, but had been abandoned as the suspects fled on foot.

“Despite a thorough search of the area, including use of the dog unit, they were unfortunately not detained. However, the vehicle was searched and seized.”

PC James Thompson, from the local policing team, said: “Our initial enquiries suggest that these suspects may have travelled into Wiltshire from elsewhere and are potentially targeting housing estates looking for high-value vehicles to steal.

“We want to warn homeowners about this incident last night and encourage people to take basic safety measures to help keep their property safe, such as ensuring all doors and windows are locked, garages are secure and car keys are kept safe.

“Also, people should consider additional security measures such as video doorbells or security lights.

“If you live in the Staverton area of Trowbridge we would encourage you to check your vehicles and property this morning to ensure you have not been targeted by these same suspects overnight.”

If you have been a victim of crime, or if you have further information about the incident overnight, please call Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting log 13 of today.
