There are concerns that a pond in Devizes has become uninhabitable for wildlife.

It comes after a van exploded by The Crammer earlier this year

Residents are saying that the number of swans and other species in the pond has been "decimated" ever since.

An emergency evacuation of the swans took place after fears that the birds could be poisoned by fuel released during the explosion which took place on March 14.

Wiltshire Times:

The birds were rescued by the Swan Support charity, while council officers and the Environment Agency monitored pollution levels in The Crammer, but it seems that their home is not suitable for them and is far from how they left it.

Wiltshire Times:

A spokesman for Swan Support, based in Datchet, Berkshire, said the Crammer stated at the time: “They will be returned but we’re not sure if they will be returned to the pond as there is not much food for them there.

"They may be released in a more appropriate location in the area.”

The charity has been approached for a statement on the current situation.

A concerned resident in Devizes, Mandy Humphreys, is a photographer and has been closely monitoring the number of birds coming to the water.

She recently set up a petition demanding more action to be taken.

Mandy said: "Since the van fire the bird population has just decimated.

"There seems to be seagulls and pigeons coming to it but very little else, and I’ve made mumblings about it to the council, but Chris Greenwood has actually asked me to take the petition down.”

In a community Facebook group for Rowde, councillor Greenwood responded to Mandy’s concerns: "The Town and Wiltshire Council have assigned an investigation team into the implications of moving the road drains which have been contaminating The Crammer for over 100 years.

"That’s the major source of the problems, which were highlighted fifteen years ago when St James’s Church wall collapsed.

"The cost of draining and disposal of the site is estimated at about £1m- and the provision of a clean water supply will well exceed that amount."

More than 350 people and counting have signed the petition Mandy has set up, which is asking Devizes Town Council to form a working committee, to make sure the problems are addressed.

Local residents have also come up with the idea of a Crammer Postcard Petition.

The postcards feature a watercolour of the Crammer before the van fire, and anyone concerned can add their postcode to the back of one of the cards.
