Our Wiltshire readers were divided in a recent online discussion where we asked the question: "Should school uniforms be scrapped and children wear their own clothes instead?"

Most people felt that school uniform plays a key role in promoting pride, self-confidence, and a feeling of belonging within the student body.

Many also believed that these benefits increase student well-being, while taking away the pressures of deciding what to wear and meeting the expectations of their social circles.

Tina Lawes said: “They definitely shouldn’t be scrapped- that’s when bullying comes in more as some parents cannot afford name clothing and things."

Velinda Stamp added: “School uniforms help put all children on the same level.”

Gillian Clancy believed it was good practice for them to dress for a particular purpose.

She said: “They need to get used to uniforms and dress codes for later life in the adult working world.”

But others were concerned that children having to wear a uniform creates more problems than it solves.

One of the issues raised was the cost of school uniforms.

Ayla Exton said: “If the price of living is going to continue rising then yes they should, or they should be free, parents shouldn't have to be worrying about affording school uniforms on top of all other expenses.

Victoria Jayne Gullis Saunders said: “I’m a true believer of wearing a uniform but do they have to go with a company that so expensive that you need a bank loan to get them.

“I’m sure there is a cheaper alternative of getting uniforms with logo on them.”

According to the UK Government, parents should not have to think about the cost of a school uniform when choosing which schools to apply for, meaning schools need to ensure that their uniform is affordable.

They are also required to keep the use of branded items to a minimum and should engage with parents and pupils when they are developing their school uniform policy.

For some people, their thoughts were more personal.

Claudia Vasiliu said: “All my life I hated uniforms- I was so happy that my daughter didn't need to wear one.

“In Romania, we gave up on them.”

Others simply voiced that they wish schools could be more lenient.

Haydi Ascotts stated: “They shouldn’t be scrapped but should be allowed to wear shorts in summer.

My son’s school won’t allow it.”
