RUNNERS, walkers, toddlers and pushers have helped raise around £1,000 for their local community by taking part in the Bradford on Avon Lions Club’s annual fun run event.

The 5k and 2k fun runs were held on Sunday (September 18) following the outstanding success of the events over the past five years.

They were staged with the support of Avon Valley Runners in the beautiful setting of the Tithe Barn, River Avon and the Kennet & Avon Canal area of the town.

Up to 35 runners gathered in Culver Close before setting off on the 5k run, while 137 others completed a 2k walk, toddle or push before the main event.

Organiser Phil Courage, of Bradford on Avon Lions Club, said: “Itr was a very successful event. We are really pleased.

“Before Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 died, we had about 80 bookings. When she died, we weren’t too sure if sporting events would go ahead.

“But we had 35 booked for the 5k and 137 for the 2k and we have been able to go ahead and raise £1,000 because all our costs were covered by our sponsors before we started.”

The inclusive family friendly event was open to all, including those with young children and those with disabilities, while pushers went free.

Trophies were presented to the fastest Boys and the fastest girls in three ager groups: under 8, under 10 and under 12. All children received a medal and a Goody Bag.

In the main 5k event, Ash Chambers finished first, around 90 second ahead of the second placed runner.

Trophies were presented for first, second and third fastest male and female as well as prizes for the fastest males and females over 40, over 50 and over 60. All finishers received a medal and a goody bag.

The Lions Club’s next event is a Comedy Night at St Magaret’s Hall on Saturday, October 8, compered by Bath comedy legend Geoff Whiting and featuring Britain’s Got Talent finalist and comedy impressionist Danny Posthill.
