The mayor of Westbury has voiced fears the town’s Post Office service could be lost because a loss-making McColls’ convenience store is threatened with closure.

The store in High Street, Westbury, is earmarked for closure as part of McColls’ plans to close 132 loss-making stores including three in Trowbridge, Corsham and Westbury, putting numerous jobs at risk.

Cllr Sheila Kimmins said: “If the Westbury store closes, we will lose our only Post Office in the town.

“There are no banks left. Lloyds, Barclays, NatWest and the Britannia Building Society have all gone.

“Elderly and vulnerable people get their money there and people go there to top up their gas and electricity pre-payment cards.

“The bus services to other nearby towns are very infrequent. It is all very concerning.”

On Tuesday (November 1), Morrisons unveiled plans to shake up McColls as regulators prepared to greenlight its takeover.

In a statement earmarking them for closure, McColls said the 132 stores were deemed to be “loss-making”, with "no realistic prospect" of them achieving a break-even position in the medium term.

The company added: "The majority of these 132 stores will now be closed in an orderly fashion over the remainder of the year.”
