MYSTERY surrounds the future occupancy of the former New Look retail store in The Gateway shopping centre in Trowbridge.

The shop in Bythesea Road was recently vacated by the retail fashion chain which apologised to its customers and said it hopes to return to the town soon.

Some people in Trowbridge are now speculating the empty unit may about to become the new home of Sports Direct, one of the UK’s leading retail sportswear chains.

Sports Direct is said to have acquired The Gateway shopping centre and may be about to relocate from its ‘anchor’ store site in The Shires Shopping Centre.

If the speculation is correct, Sports Direct would be moving next to Evans Cycles, a sister company within the Frasers Group plc.

Sports Direct has so far failed to respond to enquiries, despite being contacted by the Wiltshire Times on several occasions.

Sarah Moore, the manager of The Shires shopping centre, declined to comment on the possibility of Sports Direct relocating, although shop staff are said to be aware of it.

She said they hoped to announce some “good news” for the centre in the next few months following its acquisition by London & Cambridge Properties.
