People living in a Wiltshire town might soon be able to hire electric cars and bikes on their doorstep.

Co-Cars proposes to have electric cars around Devizes that could be hired anywhere from half an hour up to a few days - and Wiltshire Council is launching a survey to see what residents think.

Electric bikes could also be rented and returned from bike stations around the local area for 5p a minute.

According to the Co-Cars website prices for hiring the electric cars start from £5.74 per hour plus mileage.

The electric fleet the compnay has at the moment comprises of VW ID.3s, Renault Zoes, the Fiat 500e and also includes an electric van.

Annual residential membership of Co-Cars is £30 for one person and £40 for two people.

The cost of hiring the car includes tax, insurance, maintenance and roadside assist.

All bookings for the cars can be done online or via the Co-Cars app.

The company’s Volkswagen ID.3 cars have up to 260-mile range on a full charge, smart braking, intelligent cruise control, voice assist and a touch display.

Secure cycle hangars for people who don’t have space for their own bikes would also be brought in with the plans.

The council is asking people, businesses and community organisations in the town for their views on the proposal.

People who join the scheme as members would have access to electric cars without having to own one, helping them to save money and improving air quality.

Cabinet member for transport Caroline Thomas said: “If this survey shows that there is sufficient demand in Devizes for an electric car club, Co-Cars will set up the scheme in the town.

“An electric car club would enable people in Devizes to use a car when they need it, saving them money while also reducing carbon emissions. This meets key objectives in our Business Plan by ensuring our communities are well connected and also reducing carbon emissions.

“Any people, businesses or organisations interested in an electric car club in the town should take part in this survey to show that they want this in Devizes.”

The proposal for the scheme in Devizes follows similar initiatives in Bradford on Avon and Salisbury.

To take part in the survey, which closes at 11.59pm on Friday March 17, people should see here.
