A shocking case

If there was ever a case put to the British public in a referendum regarding bringing back the hangman's noose for Robert Cashman, the callous murderer of a nine-year-old innocent child.

Would any of our politicians expect a no verdict? Me neither.

I was brought up after the war in the East End of Glasgow. You could not help but know local gangsters, but you kept your distance. Their golden rule was that you never, ever harm women or children. Nor do you harm the innocent public.

The gangsters only inflict violence, to deal with fellow rival gangsters. This was a golden rule from, at one time, the murder capital city in Europe.

I will make a confession. I am no soft touch.

But every time I see that little girl on TV or the newspapers the tears run down my cheeks in despair at the loss of life of an innocent child in her own home, and that it has happened in my homeland, Britain.

I suspect I am not the only one to share those views.

We did respect the Brexit vote

The other day I signed a letter to my MP, Sir Robert Buckland, requesting a parliamentary enquiry into the effects of Brexit.

I received a shortish reply informing me that we had had a referendum (well, blow me down!), and that we must 'respect' the vote.

As far as the miniscule 1.8 per cent majority is concerned, we have respected it.

In view of that Brexit was against the express wishes of two of the four nations of Britain we've just about 'respected' the referendum to death!

What more do our governmental high priests of Brexit want us to do? Start whipping ourselves as well, and wear sackcloth and ashes?

The petition was only about holding an enquiry into the effects of Brexit, not about whether we once held a referendum or not, or what we 'aught' to feel about it.

Personally, in 2016 I signed two petitions to cancel the referendum because I thought our government was acting irresponsibly.

In fact more like a banana republic than a developed, modern democracy.

Therefore I've never felt there was anything worth respecting in the first place.

So please stop lecturing me about 'respect' and tell me how long we have to keep up this farce?
