A new tennis club could be formed in Warminster following the official opening of the town’s newly-refurbished courts.

The five tennis courts in the Lake Pleasure Grounds have been refurbished with grants from the Lawn Tennis Association and funding from Warminster Town Council.

Warminster Town Council and the LTA have invested £241,000 to renovate the five tennis courts and the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for the benefit of the local community.

The LTA contributed £127,000 and the town council invested £114,000 from Section 106 developer contributions and earmarked capital reserves.

The council said: "The LTA funding is part of a nationwide investment by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain, and open up the sport to many more people."

The courts will be officially opened by Warminster’s mayor, Cllr Phil Keeble, on Wednesday, June 7.

Together the investment in the skatepark, the splashpad and the pavilion café, the council says the courts are another step in revitalizing the park fit for the 2020s.

The courts in the Lake Pleasure Grounds are open to the general public but there are plans to set up a new tennis club for the town.

The council added: “The council is talks with a number of coaches about them by offering lessons and coaching.

“There has also been an expression of interest from locals wishing to form a Warminster Tennis Club.

“As part of its commitment to social inclusion, the Council will also be bringing forward plans for free use of the courts at various times.”

Work started on March 15 and tje courts reopened on Tuesday, May 30 following the completion of the refurbishment.

The surface of the courts has been transformed to a far higher specification and painted a dazzling blue and green.

New fencing has been installed and a gate-access system added which will work in accordance with the new online booking system.

Online booking can be made via the LTA website at www.lta.org.uk/play and via Warminster Town Council dedicated booking platform or on an app.

A year’s membership costs £40 and allows for up to four hours of per week playtime.

However, anyone wishing to use the courts without a membership can pay £6 for a single court for an hour.

Income from bookings will be ringfenced and used to maintain the courts to the new high standard, the council said.

The multi-use games area close to the courts is free to use and is ideal for football and basketball.
