Volunteers are needed to help support the conservation of the famous Westbury White Horse, with work starting next month.

English Heritage says it hopes to restore the colour of the well-known landmark in an eight-week programme starting in the first week of July.

Residents and visitors have been lobbying for more a year for the iconic White Horse to be spruced up after its colour weathered and faded.

South West Wiltshire MP Dr Andrew Murrison said: “The plan now is to restore the 'Grey Mare' to its status as the much-loved White Horse above the town with the work starting in the first week of July and lasting for eight weeks.

“I have been told the work will involve abseiling down the 180-foot landmark. There will be scope for volunteers to help to explain the conservation cleaning process to members of the public, while specialist contractors undertake the work.”

"I'm so pleased to hear that our cherished White Horse will be restored and delighted English Heritage will be using local volunteers to assist. I'm looking forward to visiting to see the work as it gets underway."

English Heritage said: “During July and August 2023, English Heritage will be undertaking conservation cleaning of the White Horse. English Heritage wants to shout about the critical work we do to look after our heritage.

“To do this we are looking for a team of energetic, friendly volunteers to help explain the conservation cleaning process, history of the site and share the area’s unique history with our visitors.

“The conservation cleaning is due to start week commencing July 3 and predicted to last eight weeks.  We are looking for volunteers to be onsite while cleaning activity is taking place.

“Volunteering sessions will be available 11am-1pm and 1pm-3pm Monday to Fridays.  Ideally, we are looking for you to volunteer one session per week. There may also be opportunity to volunteer during weekends which the volunteer manager will discuss with you.

“We are looking for confident and effective communicators who are keen to get involved.  Please also note that this role will involve standing and moving around for extended periods of time.

“This role will suit individuals who have an enthusiastic and friendly manner and enjoy meeting new people.”
