THREE police officers who saved the life of a man who slipped off the roof of a building at Westbury Railway Station are preparing to receive a national award.

PCs Sam Withey and Stephen Porter, who were based at Warminster police station at the time of the incident, and acting sergeant Dave Thompson, of Trowbridge police, will attend the Police Bravery Awards in London on July 10.

The trio were involved in a dramatic rescue operation at the train station in November 2007, when a distressed former freight train driver clambered onto a depot roof, armed with a Stanley knife and a rope, which was tied in a noose around his neck.

Officers rushed to the man's aid after he slipped off the roof with the noose still tied around his neck.

The awards will be held at the Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane.
