TOP chef Marco Pierre White is experiencing a torrid time from guests who have stayed recently at his Wiltshire hotel.

The £145-a night Rudloe Arms Hotel near Corsham has been slated in 422 reviews on TripAdvisor from guests who say the food and service is terrible.

One guest described their overnight stay as a ‘nightmare’ while another has compared it with John Cleese’s comedy series Fawlty Towers, about a badly-run Torquay hotel.

Some have left reviews warning would-be guests to ‘approach with caution’ and to ‘give it a very wide berth’.

Mr White, 61, bought the Grade II-listed Rudloe in 2012 and won rave reviews for the 40-bedroomed hotel following an extensive refurbishment.

But in recent reviews, guests have complained of terrible food and service.

One recent visitor said: “Grubby old shower mat, only 1 hand towel and brown ' liquid' in toilet brush holder.”

The guest added: “Meal was exceptionally less than average - half a beetroot and a poached egg was a starter, as was a small lettuce with mayonnaise drizzled over described as a Caesar salad.

“Mains proteins were venison / tripe/ fishcake or egg. I had fishcake which was just pureed fish moulded into fishcake - no fish texture to it at all.

“Dessert was terrible - tinned cold pear - supposed to be poached and I had creme caramel that looked and tasted like a cheap one turned out of a plastic pot from local discount food shop.”

Another wedding party guest said: “It is with a heavy heart that I report that this hotel must be on the verge of closing down.

“A skeleton staff, with a management team on a mission to sabotage at every turn. Rude, sarcastic with each of the 24 of us staying reporting miserable levels of customer service.

“I would be ashamed to have this hotel associated with my name. It was the most stressful stay at a hotel that we have ever experienced.

“Cancel your booking now. You will thank all of these reviews.”

But not all the guests were so critical of the hotel, which is set in 18 acres and has views overlooking the Box valley towards Bath.

One said: “We were very apprehensive on how our stay would be after reading so many negative comments on TripAdvisor.

“We stayed in the Marilyn room in the treetops building which was very unique and beautiful. Bathroom was pretty basic compared with the rest of the room.

“Dinner was excellent and service was great. Obviously, there are a number of supplements to pay if you wanted certain options but the steak was definitely worth it.

“Breakfast was also brilliant and there were options where you had to pay a supplement but this was also very good and not extortionate.

“The hotel itself is extremely quirky and I would definitely recommend staying here.”

The management of the Rudloe Arms Hotel have been approached for a comment but have yet to respond.

The hotel’s website says it takes pride in providing a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff.

It says: “Perfect food and incredible, caring staff where ‘nothing is too much trouble’ is what makes this truly unique and boutique English country house No 1 in the area.”
