MILITARY aircraft scrambled above Amesbury this week as part of a training exercise.

Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons took to the skies this week for Quick Reaction Alert exercises over the North Sea.

Royal Navy F-35 Lightning IIs were also spotted but the Journal understands these aircraft have now left.

The aircraft took off from Boscombe Down and keen-eyed Amesbury residents captured them in photographs.

Training exercises take place between 9am and 10pm and the pilots are due to finish on Friday, August 18.

Spotters say the best photograph opportunities are when the aircraft is coming in to land at Boscombe Down, although Amesbury residents have had no trouble watching from their homes.

This comes just over a year after residents were treated to a world-class performance by the Republic of Korean Air Force's Black Eagles.
