A planning application that proposed further signs to a potential new Poundland store in Wiltshire has been turned down by the council.

The budget retailer had previously been granted approval in May 2023 to set up signage at a retail unit on Churchill Way West in Salisbury.

At the time, the retail giant told the Salisbury Journal that plans were “tentative".

But shortly afterwards, they submitted another application for further signage above the unit.

This application has now been refused, on the grounds that “such a proliferation of signs” would be excessive.

Wiltshire Council also refused an application for two homes on land south of White House Cottage on Callow Hill in Brinkworth, between Chippenham and Swindon.

The refusal stated: “It is considered that the site is in designated countryside and the proposals would represent unjustified, unsustainable development.”

Applications for new homes were also refused at Tynings Barn on Church Lane in Wingfield and on land adjacent 70 Court Hill in Potterne.

Among the other planning applications dealt with by the council this week is one for replacement fencing at Chilmark Primary School School for “safeguarding purposes”.

An application was also submitted for a “ground mounted solar array” and associated works on land north of Teffont Mill, to the west of Salisbury.
