Two people have been arrested and nearly 200 road-related offences were reported as Wiltshire Police targeted drivers in the Trowbridge area during two days of action this week.

Project Zero – the Wiltshire Police Roads Policing Unit’s weekly operation – was in the town on Wednesday following a local Community Road Safety Day of Action on November 28.

The local officers reported 98 offences whilst the Roads Policing officers working alongside the Speed Enforcement Team detected a further 83 offences.

Up to 67 of these were excess speed offences as well as multiple drivers using mobile phones at the wheel or driving without insurance.

One driver was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, and a second driver was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possession of cannabis. Enquiries are ongoing.

Acting Inspector Will Ayres said: “Project Zero is our targeted day of action held in a different town each week, targeting drivers who commit fatal five offences – these are driving at excess speed, driving whilst using a mobile phone, drink/drug driving, driving without a seatbelt and careless driving.

“This week, the team also used an electric motorcycle to assist in targeting prolific road offenders, which proved really beneficial.”

Friday, December 1 also marks the start of the Wiltshire Police annual Christmas Drink/Drug Drive campaign. This year their message is clear – ‘Don’t Risk It’. Plan your journey home in advance.

If you suspect somebody of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, please report your concerns at www.wiltshire.police.uk, 101 or 999 in an emergency.
