Kington St Michael Parish Council has nominated two venues to be listed as assets of community value this week.

The first is the Grade II listed Jolly Huntsman pub, the only public house in the village, which is located to the north of Chippenham.

The parish council described the pub as “a centre of gravity for the village.”

It said: “It is now one of only two places in the village that provides a place to eat, which is particularly useful for the elderly who cannot or do not wish to cook for themselves, especially if they are widowed.”

According to the parish council, the pub hosts quiz nights and music nights, as well as housing collection boxes for local charities.

The second venue the parish council has nominated is the only social club in the parish, the Kington St Michael Club and Institute.

The nomination stated: “This is the only building in the parish with a proper dance floor and skittle alley.”

Both venues were previously listed as assets of community value, but their listings have recently expired.

A location can be listed as an asset of community value if the primary use of it furthers the social well-being or social interests of the local community.

Owners of listed assets cannot dispose of them without giving community interest groups the opportunity to be treated as potential bidders.
