A new research centre where artwork is made using environmentally-friendly materials and processes has opened in Trowbridge town centre.

SILT – Sustainable Image Laboratory, Trowbridge – has taken space in St George’s Works off Silver Street with help from a £20,000 Future High Streets government-funded grant.

The project space houses education and research facilities including an eco-darkroom, botanical ink and dye station and artist studios.

It will also be used for ecologically focussed art exhibitions, events and talks, with bookable workshop sessions starting January 2024.

Located at Unit 6 St George’s Works the SILT studio will stock for sale artist publications, artworks, textiles, and books as well as art materials such as paint, inks, paper and chalks.

It has been launched by artists Anna Chrystal Stephens and Alison Ballance, who said: “SILT will contribute to conversations about what an environmental art practice is and to what extent is it possible ecologically, economically and socially.

“It will look at broader issues concerning the environment, relationships with the digital, climate anxiety and how building support networks is vital at this current moment.

“Everyone in Trowbridge has been so supportive of the project and we are making great links with other cultural organisations for future plans. We’re always happy to talk if people want to get in touch."
