The MP for South West Wiltshire has said that future warfare will be “barely recognisable.”

In an article written for The Express, Dr Andrew Murrison described the recruitment issues in western militaries as a “people problem".

The Haythornthwaite Review of Armed Forces Incentivisation was a recent review of the service personnel’s terms and conditions.

According to Dr Murrison, its recommendations will give sailors, soldiers and aviators more career flexibility, with the option to leave for another role, and later rejoin.

Dr Murrison also said the Armed Forces need “laser-sharp minds” from industry and academia.

He wrote: “Warfare in a decade will be barely recognisable to those of us currently serving.

“When a fistful of highly skilled people is the difference between mission success and failure, we must act.”

He later told the Wiltshire Times: "I’ve been a regular or reservist for 43 years and can strongly recommend careers in the Armed Forces which offer unparalleled opportunities.

"For example, last year the Army was judged to be the UK’s number one employer for apprentices."

The Wiltshire MP has been the Minister for Defence People since October 2022, and served for 18 years as a medical officer in the Royal Navy.

He was recalled to serve in Iraq in 2003.
