Wiltshire Council has approved a planning application requesting permission for urgent repair and stabilisation work to be undertaken on a unique historic landmark in Wiltshire.

The Roundhouse is a small, circular building from the 18th century hidden away on Church Street, in Melksham.

According to the application, urgent pointing work and stabilisation are required to maintain its historic appearance and integrity.

Wiltshire Council has now approved these repairs and renovation will be carried out to resolve issues such as the masonry structure slumping and lime mortar and stone degradation.

The Roundhouse was originally built as a wool drying house.

Heated by an iron stove, a flue pipe would lead to a hole at the top of the roof cone whilst wool was hung over wooden beams to dry.

It has since been used as an armoury by the local Volunteer Rifle Corps and as an animal feed store.

The application states that it is now a community larder to distribute food that would otherwise be wasted.
