Bomb disposal units rushed to a Wiltshire town centre after a “possible grenade” was fished out of the River Avon.

Police were called to the Bull Pit, behind the closed Swan Hotel in Bradford on Avon, after the “suspicious device” was retrieved from the water at around 4.20pm on Sunday, January 14.

Officers cordoned off the area while Explosive Ordnance teams were tasked with removing the concerning item.

The force has now revealed that the suspicious device is thought to be a “possible grenade” and was safely removed from the scene.

As the item has now been taken away police are unable to confirm if it was viable.

A spokesperson for the force said: “At around 4.20pm on Sunday we received a report of a suspicious device being fished out of the water in Bull Pit, Bradford on Avon.

“The area was cordoned off and the device was safely removed by EOD.”
