Wiltshire is renowned for its extensive catalogue of top-quality restaurants dotted around the county, but gastropubs is where it really starts showing off.

Gastropubs typically have an extensive menu that includes top-quality food and drinks, as opposed to pubs, which usually only serve pub grub and alcohol.

If you're looking for a great meal along with your drinks, then a gastropub is the ideal spot. And for that matter, Wiltshire is the place to go.

Estrella Damm has listed three establishments in Wiltshire among the top 100 UK gastropubs.

The Longs Arms

South Wraxall, Wiltshire

The Longs Arms in South Wraxall, near Bradford on Avon, is a beautiful country pub filled with seasonal food that is served in a relaxed environment.

Their review reads: "The pub has won Best Chef and Best Food Pub finalist in Thetford Reader Awards 2016; been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017; and won the Gastropub award in the Bath Life Awards 2016.

"Meat is sourced from Aubrey Allen – an ethical, welfare-friendly, traceable and fair-trade supplier with a Royal Warrant – and Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs sponsor.

"Licensee Rob Allcock and his partner Liz bought the Longs Arms in 2017 from pubco Wadworth fox a six-figure sum.

"Buying the pub means Rob can now buy his beer, wine and spirits from wherever he likes."

The Castle Inn

Castle Combe, Wiltshire

Making its Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list debut in 2022, the Castle Inn, Castle Combe, is in a dreamy location.

Their review reads: "A true inn, the pub offers 12 luxurious ensuite bedrooms for guests to base themselves from and to sleep in following a good fill of food and drink.

"And it’s the food and drink we’re most interested in. Keeping it simple, dishes have included leek, potato and wild garlic soup with IPA soda bread; Brixham crab benedict with poached southview egg and pea shoots; and cured salmon with dill mustard, cucumber pickle and rye to start.

"Mains have included garlic and nettle stuffed porchetta with celeriac and Cotswold cider; roasted monkfish, with café du; and wild garlic gnocchi with seeds, a sourdough crumb and cheese room curd for mains.

"Desserts on the menu have consisted of sticky toffee stout pudding with vanilla ice cream; pineapple upside down cake with coconut and passionfruit; and chocolate delice with cherries and candied nuts."

The Black Swan

Devizes, Wiltshire

A beautiful Georgian coaching Inn, with great food and comfortable rooms, situated in the historic market town of Devizes

Their reviewer said: "In the heart of the Wiltshire market town of Devizes, the Black Swan is a 17th Century coaching inn owned by local brewer Wadworth. But it’s Kevin Chandler who owns the kitchen. Having worked with some of the nation’s top chefs, including Rick Stein, he has brought his own passionate brand of cooking to this historic pub and hotel.

"Wadworth’s ales are also a special ingredient. Beer battered spring onions with cashew hummus and green tahini are among the tempting nibbles, alongside pulled pig’s head, nduja and lemon mayo.

"Mains feature dry-aged steaks with triple-cooked chips, portobello mushroom and slow-cooked tomato, and curry roast cod with sag aloo, braised fennel and apricot puree. But make sure you leave room for the banoffee pavlova or a Lacock Dairy ice-cream sundae."
