TROWBRIDGE Town Fairtrade Group is looking for a new chair following the renewal of its Fairtrade Town community status.

Current chair Lyndsey Wright plans to step down at the group’s annual general meeting in June at Trowbridge Civic Centre with all welcome to attend.

She said: “It is with huge pride and joy that the Trowbridge Town Fairtrade Group are pleased to announce that Trowbridge has been awarded their renewal of Fairtrade Town / Community status.

“It is fortuitous that 2024 sees the 30th anniversary of the fairtrade mark in the United Kingdom so it’s a double celebration.”

Trowbridge Town Fairtrade Town Group was formed in 2007 to promote Fairtrade in Trowbridge and first gained Fairtrade Town status in 2009.

Mrs Wright said: “Over the last four years since the previous renewal the Group has worked hard on promoting Fairtrade within the town.

“Additionally, the town council has regularly renewed its commitment to its principles of Fairtrade and the use of Fairtrade products in all its venues.

“One of my most memorable events of 2023 was the last Fairtrade Fortnight when I challenged the children in four Primary schools to collect as many FT logos from packaging over the fortnight as they could.

“A child from each school was then awarded a prize for the most collected. In fact, it was a child from Castle Mead School who overall collected the most.

“I would like to thank the local Co-Op that made the competition possible through selling a wide range of fairtrade products.”

Mrs Wright gave the group notice a year ago that she would be stepping down at the AGM in June to spend more time with her husband when he retires.

She added: “We would love more people to get involved in our group so that we can promote Fairtrade in areas which we have not yet reached. If anyone is interested please contact us through our Facebook page.”

This year sees a change to the nationally-organised Fairtrade Fortnight which will now take place from September 9-22 to increase awareness of fairtrade products so activities in Trowbridge will be organised around that date.

Fairtrade works with farming co-operatives, businesses and governments to make trade fair. There are over 1.9 million farmers and workers spread across more than 71 countries participating in Fairtrade.

Fairtrade is about providing better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms for farmers and workers across the world.
