A group that runs a ‘good neighbour’ have launched an appeal to raise funds for a new minibus and is calling for more volunteers.

The Trowbridge Area Community Link minibus scheme provides a much-needed service to elderly, disadvantaged and disabled people using local day centres and lunch clubs in Trowbridge.

The volunteers took over the community minibus from the Guild of Community Service back in October 2022 and need to raise another £35,000 towards their £65,000 appeal.

One of the volunteers, Nicola Blackmore, said: “Our organisation is run entirely by volunteers who give up their time to enable us to run the minibus.

“Without their help, these vital clubs would struggle to stay open. We desperately need more volunteers with a D1 category on their driving licence.

“Also, we need some kind people to escort the less able passengers and be a companion during the short trip to day centres, including some wheelchair/walker users who need help from their front door to get on and off the bus via the lift.

“We want to be able to offer our service to more community groups by taking them on more day trips.  Without our help, many of these vulnerable people wouldn’t be able to leave their homes.

“I am appealing to anyone who has a few hours to spare to get in touch and help us continue this ‘good neighbour’ service.

“We also need car drivers to take clients to medical appointments and coordinators who answer the phone book trips.”

Trowbridge Link is a registered charity staffed by volunteers. It does not charge for its services but does rely on donations from clients to help meet its day-to-day running expenses.

It aims to help local people who are infirm, elderly, or otherwise disadvantaged, in a personal and friendly way.

It provides its services to residents of Trowbridge and to those in the outlying villages of Semington, Great Hinton, Steeple Ashton, Hilperton, Keevil, North Bradley, Southwick and West Ashton.

As well as taking clients to day centres, health-related groups and clubs, or visiting family in nursing homes or hospitals, the volunteers also collect shopping for those who are housebound.

Volunteers also assist those who wish to do their shopping but need someone to accompany them because of mobility or other health problems.

Volunteer drivers use their vehicle for these journeys and a mileage allowance is paid to help towards the cost of the fuel used.
