Six teenagers have been sentenced following an incident of “unprovoked violence” in a Wiltshire town centre.

Police were called to two separate reports of assault involving a group of teenage boys and girls in Borough Parade, Chippenham, during the early hours of September 2 last year.

CCTV footage captured the moment a group of young women assaulted a woman in her 30s, pulling her hair backwards before punching, hitting and kicking her as she fell to the ground.

The women involved in the attack were 18-year-olds Poppy Smith, of Butts Crescent in Trowbridge, Coral Burberry, of Oxford Road in Calne, Jessica May, of The Tinings in Chippenham, and 19-year-old Skye Roberts, of Barn Close in Chippenham.

Two young men from the same group of friends then launched an attack on a man who had been walking nearby following the initial assault.

They were 19-year-old Sean Henderson, of Field View in Chippenham, and 19-year-old Darryl Lowe, of Oak Road in Chippenham.

Footage of the incident showed one of the boys punching the man up to 20 times.

In a victim impact statement provided to the court, the male victim revealed the incident has had a “profound impact” on his life.

He added: “This assault has had a profound impact on my life. However, I find within myself a sense of forgiveness.

“I recognise that their actions may stem from their own struggles or circumstances. I hope that they reflect on this incident and choose a path of kindness and empathy towards others in the future.”

All six offenders pleaded guilty to assault by beating after appearing at Swindon Magistrates Court.

They were all sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay a £114 surcharge and £85 in costs.

Sgt Jamie Ball, of the Chippenham Neighbourhood Policing Team, labelled the incident “disgraceful”.

He said: “We are extremely grateful to the members of the public who came forward with information to help us identify and arrest these six people swiftly.

“The CCTV footage clearly shows the extent of these assaults, and the impact is described very well in the impact statements given to court.

"Violence of any kind is unacceptable on our streets, but violence of this nature is disgraceful and when it involves such young people attacking those twice their age it is really disappointing.

“I’d like to praise the victims, who despite their ordeal, have supported us in getting this case to court and ensuring the offenders could be sentenced for their actions.”
