Contentious plans for a new Asda in Salisbury will be debated at an upcoming public meeting in Trowbridge County Hall.

Strategic Planning members will discuss the proposal on Wednesday, April 17, after Councillor McGrath called it to committee over concerns of overdevelopment and negative environmental impacts, as well as noise and light pollution issues.

The planning committee will recommend the plans are approved, subject to conditions.

Wiltshire Times: The application stated that the site is currently "underutilised" and "the proposed development

The planning application was submitted to Wiltshire Council almost two years ago, in June 2022.

It requested permission to build a supermarket, petrol station and coffee drive-thru on London Road, on the green space near Hampton Park Roundabout.

The development sparked controversy among local residents, with 64 representations made in support of the proposal and 72 informing the council of their objection.

At a planning and development meeting in March 2023, Salisbury City Council chose to oppose the application, after reading a new environmental report.

It suggested there would be “a significant adverse effect” on the local bird population if construction went ahead, eleven species of which were considered “of high conservation concern.”

Salisbury City Council also noted that their previously raised concerns and suggestions had “not been addressed”, including reduced opening hours, the installation of solar panels and a lower speed limit on London Road.

The application will be considered with other county-wide applications and the council welcomes contributions from members of the public.
