Bradford on Avon’s Mount Pleasant Centre is to undertake two major renovation projects costing more than £200,000 on its historic Grade 11 listed site.

It will embark on major repair works at the town’s historic Mount Pleasant Centre with the replacement of the social club roof and the renovation of the old school toilet block.

The Mount Pleasant Centre says it has now been granted planning permission and building regulation approval by Wiltshire Council to enable both projects to proceed at a cost of over £200,000.

Work has already started on the Social Club roof with completion expected by the end of April. Work on the toilet block is planned to follow, subject to funds being obtained.

Mount Pleasant Centre chairman Derek Robins said: “The buildings on our Grade II listed site include the social club, the community centre and the toilet block and date to around 1846 when they were built for Christ Church School.

“As such they hold a special place in the history of Bradford on Avon. Many residents remember attending school here, before it moved to its current Berryfield Road site.

“The buildings remain at the heart of local life with regular classes, parties and activities held in the community centre and with the club providing a thriving social space and live music venue in the north of town.

“The buildings are all of architectural interest and an important feature of the skyline.”

John Brockbank, the centre’s treasurer and lead board member on the project, said: “The board of the Mount Pleasant Centre is delighted to have secured funding and the appropriate approvals to progress with these significant projects.

“Maintaining our buildings is a responsibility we take very seriously given their historic importance and their modern-day significance as a social and community asset, providing social and recreational opportunities for local residents.

“The board is very grateful to the various organisations who have contributed to these projects.”

Most of the required funding for the Social Club roof project has already been obtained by securing a long-term loan from the Charity Bank Ltd, together with grants awarded and a significant contribution from Mount Pleasant Centre funds.

Grants have been given by the Hills Group’s Community First Landfill Tax (£10,000), Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust (£5,000), Wiltshire Council’s Bradford on Avon Area Board (£3,740), Bradford on Avon Town Council (£750).
