A Trowbridge town councillor has urged the town’s residents to back an event in September to commemorate and celebrate the role of the UK’s armed forces and uniformed services men and women.

Cllr Antonio Piazza is inviting residents and visitors to take part in the event on Saturday, September 14 in Trowbridge Town Park.

The call follows the decision by the Royal British Legion and Trowbridge Town Council to stage a merged event.

Cllr Piazza said: “I warmly invite the general public to actively participate in the upcoming Uniform Services Day on September 14, 2024, at Trowbridge Park.

“This significant event, distinct from the traditional Armed Forces Weekend in Trowbridge, offers a unique opportunity to celebrate and honour the broad spectrum of uniformed services that play an integral role in our national safety and well-being.

“We are a committee made up of defence workers and veterans, so of course we would have loved to hold an event on Armed Forces Day, but in recent years it has proven difficult to organise.

“For Uniform Services Day our scope is wider and this ultimately helps mitigate against the risks. This is not a political decision but a pragmatic one.”

A Trowbridge Town Council spokesperson: “The decision to merge Armed Forces Day with Uniform Services Day on September 14th represents an exciting change in our event planning.

“After collaboration with the Royal British Legion, it was determined to host a larger and more engaging event. This presents a fantastic opportunity for various uniform services to unite and connect with the community meaningfully.

“The day is anticipated to feature interactive activities, informative exhibits, and enjoyable experiences for families.

“We are eager to highlight the commitment and efforts of organizations such as the Army, Police, Fire Service, St John Ambulance, RNLI, RSPCA, and local Air and Sea Cadet groups.

“Building on the success of past events, we are dedicated to making Uniform Services Day 2024 even more exceptional, fostering community support and appreciation for these essential services.”

Cllr Piazza added: “Despite there being no large-scale celebrations planned for Armed Forces Weekend this year, we remain steadfast in our commitment to recognising and commemorating the valiant efforts of our Armed Forces community through several other key events.

“These include a solemn D-Day Commemoration, the Festival of Remembrance, Remembrance Day itself, and of course, Uniform Services Day. I will of course join in on the Poppy Appeal again and would encourage all councillors to do the same."
