TEMPORARY traffic lights are likely to stay at a busy road junction in Trowbridge after a driver damaged the lights that were already there.

A driver ran into the lights at the Stallard Street roundabout junction with Newtown on Friday, May 31, damaging the signal head and knocking it out of service.

Now Trowbridge ward councillor and town council leader Stewart Palmen has given residents an update on progress to get them fixed.

He said: "The traffic light head at Newtown/Stallard Street was damaged in an RTC on Friday. The pole for the head is in poor condition and it was not safe to reattach new signal heads.

“A design for the refurbishment of the junction is currently being progressed but there are issues with statutory undertaker’s equipment preventing new poles being installed and this has led to a delay in the scheme being constructed.

“In the meantime, temporary traffic signals (with pedestrian facilities) should have been installed today.

“In the medium term, we intend to install a more permanent temporary solution, with the poles in temporary foundation blocks to allow the junction to operate as permanent traffic signals whilst discussions with the utility companies are ongoing."
